The aim of teaching speaking in junior high schools students is to communicate interpersonally, transactionally, and functionally. While based on the interview to the English Teacher of SMPN 1 Gondangrejo, Karanganyar and the preliminary study, some problems were found in the studentsí speaking skill especially in the studentsí pronunciation, grammar and fluency. To overcome the problems, pair work strategy was proposed as the strategy to be implemented in the classroom.
The research design of this study was a classroom action research covering four stages: planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The subjects of this study were 32 students of class VIII-A of SMPN 1 Gondangrejo, Karanganyar. This study which were conducted in one cycle which carried out in four meetings.
The implemention of pair work strategy to teach speaking, it was conducted in four steps. In observing step, the students was assigned to recognize the materials. In questioning, the students was assigned to ask questions which they did not know yet. In exploring, the students was assigned to discuss in pairs. The last was communicating, the students was assigned to present the result of their discussion.
The findings of this study showed that the implementation of pair work strategy could improve the studentsí speaking skill. The average score of the studentsí speaking test in the end of the implementation was 80,1. It meant that 87,5% of the students had achieved the criteria of success. Data from the observation checklist revealed that most of the students were actively involved and showed positive attitude in the learning activity. Data from the studentsí questionnaire showed that most of the students gave positive comment, and good response towards the implementation of the strategy. In conclusion, pair work strategy was a useful strategy to improve studentsí speaking skill.
