Social class in the music video \'made you look\' by meghan trainor / Kristin Widyana
Abstrak
A music video can hide a good deal of underlying social critiques besides what is actually shown. This research aims to analyze how social classes are illustrated on the signs of the music video Made You Look by Meghan Trainor who has achieved significant success and honors in the past years. Qualitative descriptive data collection by examining the visual and textual elements is used to process 13 screenshots scenes indicating signs of social class in the music video. Using multimodal the primary data (the music video) as well as the secondary data (the lyrics) are analyzed using Barthes (1957) theory. The result shows several social class illustrations the upper classes control trends the taste is a status symbol the lower classes rely on its economic state to the upper classes and status inconsistency is common. Although gender and race are essential factors in the construction of social class this research was limited in its analysis and did not extensively examine these areas. This research only considers how social class is reconstructed based on power prestige and occupation. Therefore future research should incorporate more diverse topics which jointly construct social class including those related to racism gender and sexuality to more thoroughly investigate the underlying message regarding social class.
